How to make it sound NOT like a Moog
How to make it sound NOT like a Moog
Hello,
lately i am getting a bit frustrated with my Voyager. It is a wonderfull Instrument, but since a couple of months the typical Moog sound is not matching in my music anymore. How can i make it NOT to sound like a vintage Minimoog? How can i get rid of that woody vintage string character? I want it to sound more buzzy fresh and up to date, especially with those attractive new analog synths around... Elektron A4, Arturia Minibrute, Analogue Solutions Telemark, Oberheim SEM v2...
What else is slumbering inside besides the 70's Lead styled sounds...
EDIT Ok...i just browsed the forum and found some tips. Switching filter poles e.g. or use that feedback trick. I'll do that.

Yes filter poles have a big impact as well as pot mapping. I should get that cp251 and think about a phaser and Freqbox.
Did someone use that least one with for Filter FM?

Aside from adjusting the filter poles and switching the filter to HP/LP mode, you might check these out these KnobTweak files for some fresh ideas:

I know this can sound kinda obvious, but you could also do like I did, get a Korg or a Roland, or an Oberheim analog to go along with your Moog ?

DSI Prophet REV2
Oberheim Matrix-6
Ensoniq SQ-80
Korg DW8000

All kinds of tricks to get "non moog" sounds. I even managed to replicate sounds from my ARP ProSoloist. Modulation is your friend.

Re: How to make it sound NOT like a Moog
I route my Prophet-600 thru the Voyager and control it with MIDI. That way the Voyager is kind of polyphonic. Mixing other sound sources with the Voyager oscillators may also lead to new and fresh sounds.

One Moogerfooger that'll get you some of that is the MF-107 Freq Box.
Here's another device that'll will make your Moog sound entirely different
in both ugly and beautiful ways:

Here are a lot of "buzzy fresh" sound examples:

Here is a chart showing the 252 Wavetables that can
be applied to the Input sound:

If you were to feed the Geiger Counter a Ramp wave
(like in figure 00) the Output can be all these other Wavetables.

Use distortion, bitcrushing, Sample Rate reducing, digital clipping or overdrive your mixer's preamp. Everything that distroys the sound will make it "modern".

Transpose up 2 octaves. Use the highpass filter. Use the touchscreen.

If you really want to make it not sound like a moog, a little blotter will make it sound like anything you want it to.
Re: How to make it sound NOT like a Moog
Thank you guys, some great tips. I run my Voygi sometimes through a Oto Biscuit, and i recently purchased a Make Noise Maths as well as some other Make Noise modules, to bend the V. sound.
To change the filter poles is btw. already very rewarding! The results are fantastic. Like discovering a new synth. Regarding another synth...i have a Vermona Perfourmer Mk 2 right next to the Moog. Maybe i should use that as a four stage filterbox for the V.... hmmmm.
