Voyager XL - R output channel is ~1.5db softer than L

Post by mustgroove » Mon Jul 18, 2011 11:47 pm

Just noticed something of a quirk with my Voyager XL - the Right output channel is about 1.5db softer than the Left channel... I'm pretty sure it wasn't quite like that when I first got it, but can't be 100% sure...

It's definitely not the inputs on my soundcard, I tested each input individually with another synth and there's no discrepancy in levels between them... plus swapping over the L and R channel cables at the back of the Voyager makes the L channel the soft one, so it appears to be the L & R outputs on the back of the synth itself...

It's only ~1.5db and I'm perfectly aware of the quirks of analogue gear, but still, wanted to post anyway - is this something anyone else has noticed on their Voyager (normal or XL)?

Hi, is the filter spacing at zero?

Yes, filter spacing is off... the difference is apparent even on a very simple patch setting - 1 oscillator, filter opened all the way up, filter spacing at zero, no envelopes or modulation, and the R channel is softer than the L channel by 1 to 1.5db consistently...

How are the filter poles A and B on EDIT page 4.2?

Both are set to 4 Pole...

I've got a couple sound clips to share, hopefully this might shed some light & help get to the bottom of this...

Clip 1 - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7988988/voyager ... olling.wav - this is a recording of the Voyager's output with no notes being triggered either by MIDI or by the keyboard, which I've then applied ~70db of (digital) gain to to see what's going on all the way down there... I'm scrolling through preset bank A throughout this clip, and you can hear some of the oscillators bleeding into the R channel even though no notes are being triggered

Clip 2 - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7988988/voyager ... preset.wav - this is a recording of essentially a blank preset (which I generated from the totally blank "Default PROG" preset, G-128 by (a) turning on Osc1, (b) turning Osc1 volume all the way up, and (c) setting filter spacing to zero... no other parameters were touched)... as you can see from the file, the R channel is softer than the L channel... hopefully this test should eliminate variables like filter pole settings, filter spacing, etc. etc.

Signal chain: Voyager XL -> Prism Orpheus inputs 1 & 2, which are inst inputs... gain set to +20db per channel on the Orpheus... No DIs, mixers or anything else in the signal chain whatsoever... cables are Mogami Gold 1/4" mono and are basically new...

If I'm just being pedantic and this is all just a quirk that's well within normal experience for an analogue synth please do let me know :) But the responses so far tend to make me think there might be something up?
