WHen I storyboarded the film, I got the idea about a Moog-o-lantern, but if you look up at the Moog logo at the top of the screen, it sort of defies the laws of pumpkin physics. Getting the 16th note to hang down and getting the double bands to show either with light or without light is a challenge if you approach pumpkin carving from the standpoint of "I must cut all the way through" like I had always thought.
My sister looked up some stuff about pumpkin carving, just happened to have some paper cutting blades/handles, and learned that since there is an inch or so of pumpkin skin, you don't have to cut all the way through for the light to shine through. This is essentially the secret of carving such designs that rely on gravity defying structures like the Moog logo. She didn't use the el cheap-o pumpkin carving kit, she used different razors of different sizes/tips.
So while searching the site, she saw the Bob Moog Foundation logo and knew instantly that that particular logo lends itself perfectly to pumpkin carving. Since the rules of the contest said no logos/likenesses I got on the horn and emailed the BMF but never could get through to anyone. So I wasn't able to use the pumpkin in the video.
I don't know how the hair turned out like that, if you carve into a pumpkin though you will see what I guess are "rinds" that shread off and that gave the texture I think.
In my opinion it was her pumpkin that was the centerpiece of the whole film. I thank her very much for her work.
When she sent me the initial sketch of the Moog Logo on the pumpkin I thought it was so neat, but when I saw the actual pumpkin, I wish it was something that would have lasted much longer. I didn't really get to see the Bob-O-Lantern because I didn't bring it to the set since I couldn't shoot it.
