Dear Asheville ... Love, your friends at Moog

Dear Asheville,

This week's announcement that Moogfest is moving to Durham in 2016 was bittersweet for all of us here at Moog Music. We know there are many people in Asheville who are disappointed by the news. We hear you, and we appreciate your passion and your loyalty. The decision was not an easy one for us --  we're sorry to see the festival leave Asheville, but we're also excited for its future in Durham.

Moogfest 2014 was incredible. We were thrilled to bring new ideas and new experiences to our beloved city and to showcase the magic of Western North Carolina to the world. It was a giant undertaking and the employees of Moog Music put a lot of hard work and dedication into producing Moogfest, in addition to performing their regular jobs designing and building synthesizers.

To be clear, Moog Music invested $3 million of our own money to put on Moogfest 2014. No money was lost by the City or County. In fact, Moogfest injected $14 million into our local economy -- that's a 7,700% return on Buncombe County and Asheville City's $180,000 investment. Read the independent study conducted by the Asheville Buncombe Economic Development Coalition and Western Carolina University here. The $1.5 million dollar loss was shouldered by Moog Music alone.  We see it as an investment in an event that we believe is a great benefit to North Carolina, its diverse music scene and its creative technology industry.

Asheville is our hometown and it was always our intention for our city to be the forever home of Moogfest. Unfortunately, it's just not possible to sustain the festival here, and Moogfest isn't the only festival to learn this lesson. An event of this scope needs public and private partners in order to thrive, and we couldn't find enough of those partners in Asheville. Thankfully, we found them in Durham, another great and growing city right down the road in North Carolina.

Moog has been a part of the Asheville community since 1978 and we plan to be here for many years to come. We live here, we work here, and we raise our families here. As an employee owned company, and as a local manufacturer with an internationally recognized brand, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to make a positive impact on our community. We love Asheville and we'd like nothing better than to have an internationally recognized music festival take place in our downtown area again one day in the future. In the meantime, we hope you'll support our continued efforts to bring great artists, technologists, futurists, and musicians to North Carolina. We invite you to come celebrate the synthesis of art, music and technology with us in Durham at Moogfest 2016!
