February 7th marks both the 1974 birthdate of visionary hip-hip producer James "J Dilla" Yancey and the 2006 release of his highly celebrated album Donuts. Although Donuts was received with universal acclaim, J-Dilla's battle with the uncurable blood disease TTP ended with his passing on Feburary 10, 2006.
Today we remember J Dilla's monumental contribution to the evolution of hip-hop and celebrate the musical memories he left behind. In the video below, family and friends explore Dilla's vinyl collection and recall their personal stories of his life. At the 20:30 mark, producer J Rocc points out J Dilla's Minimoog Moog Voyager as the "seasoning on his (Dilla's) beats."
