Operating from 1933 through 1957, Black Mountain College was one of the leading experimental art schools in America.  Modeled after the interdisciplinary curriculum of the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College attracted such notable students and teachers as R. Buckminster Fuller, Elaine and Willem de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg.  John Cage experimented with his first "Musical Happenings" at the college as early as 1952.
