Guitar Distortion Pedal

I have recently undertaken in a hobby of electronics- guitar effects pedals mainly. I have built my first pedal according to instructions, as a beginner should. I built the Electra Distorion Pedal off of Effectronics. It had a schematic as well as a pc board lay out. Me being a beginner, I used the pc board layout more than I did the schematics, for i am just learning how to read and understand them. I checked and double checked all my circuits, and all of them are good. I do not know what the problem is. I know one problem is grounding because it buzzes when i touch the strings. Another thing it does is it will work like a bypass when it is on, and buzz really loud with barely audible guitar in the background. I'm not sure why it does that, but if anyone has any suggestions for me, i would really appreciate the help.
