Electric Blue Headphone Out

I looked around and could find a topic like this...
Has anyone tried taking the headphone out and putting it into the external audio input? I used my y-cable and cranked up the input pot which distorted it and mixed it with the other oscillators. It produced some pretty cool sounds that were what I would call "anxious" sounding, Silly, stupid little trick,but it amused me!:) Try it if you already havent!

You should not do that. Moog Music says this can damage the Voyager due to impedance mismatch. Instead, route one of the main out to the Ext. In.

I understand that there could e an impedance mismatch. What about hi-z versus lo-z like a line level or a guitar signal? Aren't those different impedences? Did you email moog about it or something? I'm not being an a-hole I really want to know. The last thing I want to do is mess up my mmv!

I'm not trying to be an A-hole either, I'd just hate to see your Voyager get damaged!
Most headphones have a high input impedance so them need a strong signal to drive them. A head phone output is a stronger signal than most audio outputs and stronger than most audio inputs can handle. You potentially damage your input if the signal is too strong. Here is the response that Punkdisco got from Moog when he asked them about the headphone out. This was posted on the Squarewave group:

Hi - I once asked the same question on the Moog site forum. Got this reply
from Moog:
Hello Paul -
Saw your topic on the forum.
Don't use the phones output as an input to the mixer section - it's the
wrong load for the headphone output. However, w/ the Mixer out/Filter in
jack, if you make a TRS cable w/ a jumper from ring to tip, you get the
mixer output w/ out breaking the connection to the filter and you can feed
that to the external audio in for some gross sounds. The other option is to
take either the left or right audio out to the xternal audio input, or an
aux send from your mixer, or..

I thought I would resurrect this old thread, because there have been many posts recently regarding the headphones into the ext. input. I'm confused whether this practice is good or bad for the Voyager. Judging from this post it seems to be not a good idea.

Especially since it is so easy to do it with the right out or the effects send loop. A 6" patch cord.
