!Not Moog related question! How do they make vocal sounds?

The three guys used to choose a note and sing it really deep.

That girl came into the room while they were thinking about the song, when she whispered something to them, they decided to use that vocal.

I have an original E-MU Proteus 1 which features a choir sample that sounds almost identical,

Is there any chance you can provide me a few samples of that choral sample please ? Let's say C3 and C4 or something ? Thanks.

As soon as I heard a Waldorf Microwave (based on the original PPG technology), I realized how much PPG there was in early Depeche Mode recordings after Speak and Spell.

If you want that PPG sound, check out the Waldorf PPG Wave 2.V. It's a VST softsynth plugin which is a lot more practical for most people than any piece of old PPG hardware. There are lots of other great softsynths as well, many of them emulating vintage synths. Now if only my Mac was a little more powerful...

They used an Emulator I. The first 'budget' sampler, after the Fairlight came on the market. The sample they used was a gregorian choir.

Yes... and you can get the same high quality 8-bit sampled sounds from a Casio SK-1.....

Actually i don't think kraftwerk ever used a Mellotron.... I'll double check on this!!

No. Kraftwerk didn't use a Mellotron.

The choir sounds were all from a Vako Orchestron. TERRIBLY inferior! They also tried to give the impression that they had a team of boffins working with them to create bespoke instruments. I doubt that this was much more than hype, but they cretainly 'dressed-up' conventional technology to look cool on stage.

I thot the Gizmotron had been superceded by the Ebow. Do they sound radically different?

The Gizmotron sounds more 'bowed'.... especially on a bass, because it physically bows the strings with rosin-coated wheels. Great for those early ELO 'cello stabs!

The E-Bow sounds more like bad feedback if you're not careful, and takes a longer time to excite the string, so it sounds a bit like a long attack setting on a synthesizer. It does however come with a hilarious cassette tape demonstrating its divers properties!!

Ah. The Vako Orchestron. One of the few synths to use optical discs for its sounds. I remember an interview Mark Mothersbaugh (of Devo) did for Keyboard magazine. He mentiond the Orchestron and said he liked to put in the disks backwards so that it made sucking sounds.

I think an instrument called the Optigan was the home version of the Orchestron. I saw one at Sears a long time ago ('72-'73).

Yeah! The Optigan was marketed by Mattel as nothing more than a sophisticated toy. Lots around in the USA, but fewer in the UK. A friend of mine witnessed one being chucked into a dumpster at the local public tip...... Before he could run over and rescue it, it had fallen 20ft to it's splintery demise. Discs regularly come up on eBay, but the machines less so.

Still, not as bad as the story last week where a UK housewife sent a rare early Chamberlin found in the basement of a house her family had just moved in to down to the County Refuse Dump.....
